Versions +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1.1 (April 9, 2007) Added some more information about Kanako's attacks which I hadn't seen on previous playthroughs. Also added information about the trajectory of Noriko's shots. Added more information to the strategies for Chisato, Eriko and the final battle. 1.0 (February 18, 2007) It took me three months to get just a basic version of my Maribato! FAQ finished. I banged this one out in three days (although I lost some sleep in the process). I'm pretty sure I've covered everything here. If I haven't, I'll update it later. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C. Special Thanks +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Thanks goes out to the various and sundry posters on 4chan for hipping me to the game and showing me how to get it. And for being the ruthless but occasionally benevolent jerks they usually are. Thanks also goes to Beta-Waffle's blog review of Lilian Fourhand for convincing me to try the game and for helping me learn the controls. Check it out for a thoughtful, unbiased review of the game at http://www.beta-waffle.com/blog/?p=162 . And thanks to French Bread Software for making such a fun game. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Introduction / Background --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lilian Fourhand is a side-scrolling shooter made by French Bread Software (the publishers of the the acclaimed Tsukihime fighter "Melty Blood"), originally released in 2005. The characters originate from the anime series Maria-sama Ga Miteru (or "Marimite" for short), which translates to "The Virgin Mary Is Watching", a long-running novel series that was adapted into a TV anime and manga in 2004 and ran for 24 episodes over two seasons and a currently running (2007) 10 episode video miniseries. The show itself has nothing to do with fighting; it revolves around a group of girls at Lillian Academy, a private female-only Catholic high school in Japan (although not all the girls that attend it are Catholics). It would be best described as a slow-paced soap opera that relies on characters and story rather than action or fanservice; however, the rampant lesbian subtexts that permeate the characters' interactions made it wildly popular, and the anime (and corresponding novels and manga) have a huge Japanese fanbase. The zany comedy shorts on the DVDs didn't hurt either. Anime series that become popular (especially those with a lot of cute girls) tend to be selected by amateur software programmers and game designers to make "doujinshi" (unofficial) games, to entertain fans of the series and also give the developers experience, helping them along in their careers. While this is clearly a violation of copyright law the anime companies understand and appreciate the attention these games bring to their product and generally let them be (unlike the U.S. where they would get their pants sued off within seconds of even announcing a game--remember those guys who planned to remake Chrono Trigger?). There are hundreds if not thousands of doujin games in circulation in Japan, mostly fighting games as they are fairly simple to program. Lilian Fourhand is a pretty straightforward, easy to understand and play game. The concept of the game is incredibly simple: pick a pair of girls and guide them through their journey to school, through gym class, chapel, and the botanical garden and out of school, while blasting everything and everyone that gets in their way. Nonetheless, it has high production values, and is a decently fun diversion for fans of the series. Like most Marimite doujin games, Lilian Fourhand makes use of pairs of girls known as soeurs; "Soeur" (pronounced "SOO-ah") is a French word that means "sister". At Lillian, every new student is paired with another student a year older; this older girl serves as a mentor, tutor, companion and big sister/role model to the younger girl to help her become acclimated to the school and assist in her education. The two girls are usually matched for compatibility and often become best friends; in rare cases crushes or romantic relationships develop between the two but it's usually of a fairly innocent nature (let's not forget Catholicism is not the most accepting religion of homosexuality, and in addition homosexuality is culturally treated by Japan as a 'phase' children, especially girls, go through and then grow out of--a view many psychologists would surely dispute). When the younger girl has completed a year at school and moves on to second-year, she selects her own soeur and takes her under her wing; meanwhile, the older girl, who is now in third year, continues to mentor her soeur until she graduates (Japanese high schools run from 10th-12th grade, unlike many U.S. high schools which run from 9th-12th). The younger soeur usually refers to the older girl as "onee-sama" (respectful way of saying "big sister"). The primary reason I wrote this FAQ was because, well, I didn't see any other FAQs around and while the game is fairly simple in concept, understanding what to do, when, is the hardest part. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Getting Started --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A. Installation +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If you were a good person and bought the game, put the disc in the drive, let it load, then run the installer. Pick the folder you want it to install in (it'll make a default folder in your Program Files folder for you automatically so you don't have to do anything) and click OK. Simple enough. If you were a cheap person and got a CD image, use a mounting program like DaemonTools or Alcohol 120% to mount the image to a virtual drive and run it. Then see above. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ B. Title Screen +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Before the game starts, a window will pop up asking you to confirm your settings for the game, choosing between Full-Screen and Window mode, and the level of color detail for your display (all French Bread games have this screen; Melty Blood players will recognize it). You can also configure your controller buttons here; at least take a look at what they're set to so you know what button does what when the game starts (I recommend a joypad-equipped controller with at least four face buttons such as the Sony DualShock or equivalent). This is all in English so you should have no trouble. If you use a keyboard to play, the controls are permanently set as follows: arrow keys = move N = shoot left M = jump < = shoot right > = dash F5 = pause Click OK to load the game. After the French Bread software logo, the title screen will appear. Here you can pick from "Game Start", "Ranking" and "Exit Game". Use the Left Shot button to confirm and the Jump button to cancel. "Game Start" starts the arcade-mode game. "Ranking" displays the highest scores, and the characters and difficulty level they were achieved on. "Exit Game" closes the game (in window mode, you can also close the game by clicking on the box in the upper right corner like any other Windows program). After choosing "Game Start", you'll be asked to confirm your difficulty level. Once you've done that, you'll move to Character Selection. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C. Character selection +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When you first start out, you'll have the choice of three different teams of two girls. These teams are fixed; the first character of the team is the one you control, while the second is your soeur. After you've confirmed your team, you'll have to choose between Automatic and Manual Lock-on. Automatic is recommended for beginners, while Manual is for those looking for a challenge. Unlike many games, Lilian Fourhand has a Stage Select available right from the start. You can start at any stage you've already completed; that means once you've beaten the game you have free run of the game and can start at the last stage, if you want to (although you have to 'unlock' the stages from the beginning each time you move to a difficulty level you haven't played at before). Press left and right to choose a stage. Characters' power and range are ranked by the game on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. Each team also has a variable number of maximum targets for their lock-on shot (more on that later). Sachiko Ogasawara & Yumi Fukuzawa (Rosa Chinensis = Red Rose) Power: 3 Range: 5 Max Lock-on: 8 targets The game recommends Sachiko and Yumi as the best team for a beginner because of their long range. Their low attack power can make some fights difficult, however, so it's a double-edged sword. Sachiko fires arrow-shaped projectiles in a straight line, while Yumi shoots smaller beams in a spread pattern. Both girls' attacks have full screen range. Yumi's lock-on shot is thin horizontal lasers that are quite fast and powerful. Shimako Toudou & Noriko Nijyou (Rosa Gigantea = White Rose) Power: 4 Range: 4 Max Lock-on: 10 targets The most balanced of the initial teams and the one I'd recommend for first time players. They have decent range and do more damage than Sachiko and Yumi. Shimako throws cross-shaped projectiles that fly in a boomerang pattern ala Castlevania, while Noriko throws Buddhist Jizu beads which travel on a rainbow arc up into the air and then down to the ground. Both attacks have about half-screen range. Noriko's lock-on shot is multiple, somewhat slow homing laser beams. Rei Hasekura & Yoshino Shimazu (Rosa Foetida = Yellow Rose) Power: 5 Range: 2 Max Lock-on: 12 targets It is recommended you at least beat the game with one of the other teams before you try this one. Rei's sword-slash projectiles are powerful but have very short range, only about three or four character lengths ahead or behind her. To compensate for this, Yoshino has homing shots that look like doves with full-screen range. Nonetheless, to do significant damage you have to get in enemies' faces, so be careful. Yoshino's lock-on shot is lightning, which isn't very powerful. Completing the game with all three teams, on any difficulty level, with any number of continues, unlocks a hidden fourth team. Yumi Fukuzawa & Touko Matsudaira (Rosa Chinensis = Red Rose) Power: 5 Range: 5 Max Lock-on: 9 targets I'd be lying if I said I wasn't biased since this is my favorite pair from the show, but Yumi and Touko are an unstoppable team. With maximum range and power, they can mow right through most enemies and bosses. Yumi shoots the same spread lasers as before, while Touko predictably shoots drills that move straight ahead and have some start-up, but are powerful and can lodge in an enemy and hit them multiple times (supremely useful on bosses). Touko's lock-on shot is a satellite beam from space. (Note that on Touko's name they screwed up: all the other characters on the selection screen have their names listed in English western-style with their given names first and their family names second, but Touko's is listed Japanese-style as "Matsudaira Touko", with her family name first.) Completing the game with Yumi and Touko enables a custom character selection. More on this in the Extras section, part G. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. Controls, display and gameplay --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A. Controlling The Game +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Lilian Fourhand is an automatically-scrolling game. While in a stage, your characters will continuously move towards the right, the screen scrolling along with them. Pressing left does not make them move left, just stops them from moving right (the screen will still continue to scroll, causing them to move towards the left part of the screen). Double-tapping right or left will make your characters dash forwards or backwards (this can be done in midair as well). When the screen stops scrolling (for some boss fights), you can move left or right freely. Pressing down makes your characters crouch. There are four important buttons besides the joypad in terms of control. Two of them are your Shot buttons. As might seem obvious, the Shot Left button fires your characters' shots towards the left side of the screen and Shot Right shoots towards the right. While having one button to shoot left and one to shoot right seems awkwards at first, it's intuitive and you'll quickly get the hang of it. Since you'll have to frequently shoot enemies both in front of and behind you, it's crucial to be able to fire independently, thus the two buttons. You can fire either direction on the ground or in midair. Pressing the Jump button makes your characters jump. Presnd behind you, it's crucial to be able to fire independently, thus the two buttons. You can fire either direction on the ground or in midair. Pressing the Jump button makes your characters jump. Pressing it again in midair makes them jump a second time. In addition to shooting, you can jump on enemies Mario-style to damage them without taking damage yourself (this is crucial in some later boss fights). Jumping while pressing left makes your characters do a backflip; firing while doing this backflip sends your shots in a circular pattern. Pressing the Dash button has the same effect as double-tapping right: you dash towards the right (this can be done in midair too, called an air dash.) The Shot buttons work differently depending if you are set on Automatic or Manual Lock-On mode. On Automatic mode, holding down either Shot button will result in a continuous beam of shots, and releasing the button enables Lock-On (pressing either shot button will fire the Lock-On shot if you have a lock). In Manual mode, the Shot buttons must be pressed repeatedly to fire continuously, while holding down a Shot button enables Lock-On (release the button to fire it). Holding Up while firing makes your characters fire upwards at a 45 degree angle, which makes it a bit easier to nail airborne bosses with a constant stream of bullets while remaining on the ground. You use your main shot to hit foes in the foreground, and the Lock-On shot to hit enemies in the background. The number of enemies you can lock onto at once varies depending on your characters. The more background enemies you lock onto and blast at the same time, the more points you earn (this is called "chaining"). Your soeur is the one who fires the Lock-On shot, so if she isn't with you, you can't fire it (more on this below). While trying to control two characters at the same time seems difficult, it's not. If you've ever played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or 3 you have an idea of what this plays like. Much like Tails would be to Sonic, the soeur mimics what you do. If you move, she moves. If you jump, she jumps. If you shoot, she shoots. That's all there is to it. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ B. Display screen +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In the upper left corner of the screen is a display with most of the game's important data situated there. 1. Life Bar The large bar underneath your characters' names is your life bar. You take damage any time you are touched by an enemy or their attacks. Your soeur does not take damage unless you do, even if she gets hit (much like Sonic and Tails once again). Your life bar is charged back up upon successfully completing a stage, and you can also collect Life Recover power-ups to replenish it during a stage. Unlike most platforming games, falling in a bottomless pit does not necessarily result in instant death; you instead lose a sizable chunk of your health bar and your character will reappear floating down from the sky. Press left and right to guide her to a safe landing away from any pits and gameplay will immediately resume. If your life drains completely, your game ends and you'll be given an option to continue. The number of continues you get depends on how many credits you have. The number of credits you start with automatically increases depending on how long you've spent playing the game. For this reason it's a good idea to spend a few hours playing easy and normal mode to log some time and earn more credits before trying to tackle hard mode. 2. Shot gauge Beneath the life bar is a smaller bar (called the shot gauge). Every time your soeur fires the bar empties and starts recharging (usually takes about a second). Once it has recharged, she can fire again. In the meantime your character is the only one who can fire. If your soeur falls down a pit by herself or otherwise gets knocked off the screen, the shot gauge will turn yellow and have a big X over it. It will refill after a few seconds, and once it does, your soeur will appear floating down from above with the words "Get your soeur" around her. Touch her and she will rejoin you. If you miss her and she's scrolled off the screen, you'll have to wait a few more seconds before you can try to grab her again. Losing your soeur means you lose her shot, and you also lose the ability to fire Lock-On shots, since the soeur is the one who fires them, so reclaim them quickly. 3. Lock-On gauge To the right of the shot gauge is a series of diamonds. These represent available 'targeting slots' for your Lock-On shot. One diamond will light up for each background enemy you lock onto; once you fire, the diamonds will go back to black. If all the diamonds light up, you've reached your maximum number of possible targets and you won't be able to lock onto any more enemies until either you fire the Lock-On shot, or some of your targets scroll off the screen. The number of diamonds vary depending on your team: Sachiko/Yumi have the fewest and Rei/Yoshino have the most. 4. Score/High score In the top middle of the screen is your current score (in blue) and the highest recorded score (in red). 5. Radar At the top right corner is a large rectangle with a smaller rectangle inside it. The large rectangle marks the entire field of play, while the smaller rectangle indicates the area currently on screen. Your characters appear as white dots on this field, while enemies appear as red dots, enemies in the background show up as orange dots, enemy shots look like pink dots, and your shots appear as green dots. This helps you keep track of oncoming swarms of enemies and which direction they're coming from. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C. Power-ups +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Power-ups can be acquired by shooting a red bird known as the Bonus Bird. It moves slowly across the screen but requires several shots to destroy and can sometimes get overlooked amid the chaos of a firefight. Make absolutely sure you get every single power-up, as they are critical to your success (ESPECIALLY the life restores and shot power-ups). "Recover" (Life restore): Restores your life bar to full. Collect these at all costs. "Shot" (Main shot power-up): Strengthens and extends the range of your main shot. The amount of powered-up shot remaining decreases with each shot, so make them count when you have them against bosses. "Invisible" (Temporary invulnerability): Enemies' shots won't be able to hit you for a brief period of time. You can still fall down pits, though. "Laser" (Lock-on shot power-up): Lets you fire more lock-on shots at background enemies. Works for a limited number of shots. "Bonus" (Free points): Gives you a 50,000 point bonus. Enemies will also occasionally drop items when defeated, like ice cream, fruit, stars, candy, etc. These items will give you 1,000-5,000 points for each one you collect, so grab them if you want to roll up your score. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ D. Enemies +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Non-boss enemies are listed here, bosses appear in the walkthrough along with strategies for defeating them. Ippan Seito (schoolgirls) appear in: Stages 1-6 Schoolgirls who run around in the foreground and get in your way. Easily dispatched with your shots. They occasionally toss projectiles at you, and often drop point-bonus items when defeated. On Hard difficulty they'll throw fireballs at you. * Jitensya Seito (biker girl) appears in: Stages 1-4 Girl who appears from behind riding a bicycle who sometimes jumps towards the middle of the screen. Stay away from the back edge of the screen and watch your radar and you won't get surprised and hit. Blast her with your backwards shot. * Karasu (crow) appears in: Stages 1-5 A big black crow who flies across the screen slowly. On Hard difficulty they'll dive at you. Shoot them down to keep them out of your way. Some of them drop gingko nuts as projectiles from their claws, which can be shot as well. * Bonus bird appears in: Stages 1-6 Looks like a Karasu, but red. Requires several shots to defeat but leaves behind valuable power-ups once defeated. * Benibara Shineitai (background girls) appear in: Stage 5 Youko's personal harem (note the red roses pinned to their shirts), whom she'll summon into battle to assist her. They're no stronger than normal schoolgirls, though. * Suzume (sparrow) appears in: Stages 1-5 Small brown birds who appear in large swarms. Mow them down with continuous fire and they'll often drop point-bonus items. * Kemusi (caterpillar) appears in: Stages 2-5 Caterpillars dangling from a thread. Easily defeated. On Hard, they'll shoot small fireballs at you. * Kumo (spider) appears in: Stages 2-5 A big spider dangling from a thread. Shoot it down to clear it out of the way. Takes more hits than the Kemusi. On Hard, shoots triple fireballs at you. * Taisougi Seito (Beanbag/medicine ball throwers) appear in: Stage 3 Girls in gym class uniforms. They first appear in the background, tossing beanbags into the foreground. Deal with them with your Lock-on shot. Later you'll encounter them in both the foreground and background. Nail the foreground ones with your main shot and the background ones with lock-on, being mindful of the huge medicine balls they'll be tossing around. The medicine ball throwers require far more hits to defeat. * Tamanige Seito (basket carrying girls) appear in: Stage 3 Girls with big baskets strapped to their backs, trying to catch the beanbags thrown by the Taisougi Seito (this is a common activity in Japanese P.E. classes). They are invulnerable to your shots, but you can beat them by jumping on their heads, making them lose their balance and fall. * Kendou Bu (swordsmanship club) appear in: Stage 3, 6 Girls in training gis wielding wooden shinai (practice swords). They will charge you swinging their swords and will also leap considerable distances and throw energy balls at you from their swords. Tougher than normal schoolgirls, they require a few shots to finish but will often charge right into your shots. * Tenshi (angel) A (short hair) appears in: Stage 4 Tenshi (angel) B (long hair) appears in: Stage 4 Small angels with trumpets who fly onto the screen, pause, then blow their trumpets, causing a musical note to fly towards you. The note will damage you if it hits you, but you can destroy it by shooting it. The angels themselves are easily beaten. * Hachi (bees) appear in: Stage 5 Large bees carrying spears. They'll appear on screen in large numbers, hover for a second or so, then charge you at high speed and try to stab you repeatedly. Blast them first. * Dance Bu (ballroom dancing club) appear in: Stage 4 Couples in formal dress (yes, they are all girls) who float up and down in the air as they twirl around, dancing. Jump over or run underneath them, as they are invulnerable and can't be defeated. * Seikatai (choir) appear in: Stage 4, 6 A group of eight singing girls in choral uniforms who appear just before your fight with Shizuka, surround you and float around you in a circle, singing musical notes that can damage you. Fire away at them whenever one is in front of or behind you. They take several shots to down. * Piano Sousya (piano player) appears in: Stage 4, 6 Shizuka's piano accompanist, who appears with her during your fight against her. She'll send out constant streams of musical notes and requires quite a few shots to destroy, but she's a big target, so hose her quickly so you can get her out of the way and concentrate on Shizuka. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. FAQ / Walkthrough --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the "Now Loading" screen, you can play with the Now Loading sign, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night style, by moving it around with the directional keys and spinning it with the buttons. You are scored on Shoot-down percentage, Life remaining, and Boss-kill time. Shoot as many targets as you can to get higher Shoot-down percentage, try to finish the stage with as much Life remaining as possible for more Life points (if you have to use a continue in the stage, you automatically get 0 Life points), and defeat the mid-boss and boss of each stage as fast as possible for more Boss time points. A perfect in any category nets you 200,000 points apiece. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stage 1: 8:10 AM +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The music in this stage is a techno version of Johann Pachelbel's "Canon In D", aka "That Song They've Played At The Start Of Every Single Christian Wedding For The Past 300 Years." Your girls start out running down the city street on their way to school. You'll encounter a few girls, first in the foreground, then the background, to get you used to firing your main and lock-on shots. Next is a group of crows with a Bonus bird who drops a Shot power-up when defeated. Grab it. You'll travel up a hill, then come to some bottomless pits with girls in the background, some walking, some on bikes. Nail them with Lock-on shots, but jumping the pits is more important. Remember that if your soeur falls down a pit, you lose your Lock-on shot until you get her back. Going down a hill, you'll encounter some sparrows. Blast them. More crows and girls follow, then there'll be a biker girl coming from behind with a bunch of other girls in the area. You'll see a bus screech to a stop in the background and pass it by. Quickly shoot the Bonus bird for Invisibility. Then the bus will catch up to you and your first mid-boss fight will start. =================================== Stage 1 Mid-boss: Tsutako Takeshima =================================== The windows on the bus will open and Tsutako the school shutterbug (wearing glasses and holding camera) will appear along with half a dozen girls. On easy and normal, Tsutako won't actually attack, just take pictures of you, but the girls riding with her will toss debris at you. You'll probably take them all out incidentally while you blast Tsutako. On hard, Tsutako will shoot three pink orbs at you from her camera in a spread pattern. Either jump and hit her or stay on the ground and angle your shots up at her (staying on the ground is probably safer since you can hit the junk the girls throw). After about 10 seconds she'll shut the windows, then they'll open again and she'll reappear, possibly in a different spot on the bus. The other girls will regenerate, so you'll probably need to blast them again. After you knock Tsutako's health bar down to nothing, the bus will stop and the fight will conclude. Tons of crows appear afterwards. Blast them all for some points-bonus items. Hit the Bonus bird for a Laser power-up, then nail the girls in the background with Lock-on shots while hopping more pits. Another Bonus bird will give you a 50,000 point bonus. You'll be beseiged by birds and background girls, and another Bonus bird will drop a Life recover, which you should grab at all costs. The music will change, and the final battle of the stage will begin. ================================================= Stage 1 Boss: Touko Matsudaira / Suguru Kashiwagi ================================================= Sachiko's cousin Touko will appear, riding in a Ferrari convertible dri=============================================== Stage 1 Boss: Touko Matsudaira / Suguru Kashiwagi ================================================= Sachiko's cousin Touko will appear, riding in a Ferrari convertible driven by Sachiko's other cousin (and fiance) Suguru. Touko will toss items at you, including barbells, beach balls, and spiked balls that take several hits to destroy. Avoid or blast these projectiles and keep pasting Touko with bullets. After you've knocked her life down to 75%, Touko will get mad and throw a fit, denting Suguru's car's paint job and making him freak out. The car will zoom ahead, then pass behind you in the background while Touko lobs junk at your position. Try to get some hits on Touko with your Lock-on shot. The car will reappear and Touko will toss spiked balls and now adds bombs to her arsenal. Dash and jump to avoid them because they have a large explosive radius even if you blow them up in midair. When you have her life down to 50%, she'll throw another fit, Suguru will zoom the car ahead, and she'll make another pass at you from the background, throwing bombs exclusively this time. The car will reappear, and Touko, living up to her "Drill Girl" nickname, will toss drills into the air, which will pause for a second and then home on your current position. Keep moving and jumping to fake the drills out and blast Touko. Her life will be low at this point so go for the kill. When Touko's life is depleted, Suguru's car breaks down and he and Touko are left in the dust. On Hard mode, this fight is MUCH tougher, as Touko launches an essentially nonstop flood of projectiles at you, and the drills attack much faster. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stage 2: 10:20 AM +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Maribato! players will recognize the background music in this stage. Passing through the forest of Ginkgo trees on the school grounds, you'll encounter a few girls and some caterpillars descending from the branches. A Bonus bird not long after drops a Laser power-up. The crows in this stage drop Ginkgo nuts from the sky, so shoot or dodge them. Many girls appear in the background in this part, so put the power-up to use and lock-on to them. Watch out for fireballs thrown from the background by them. Next are some pits, caterpillars and spiders. Keep going, but watch for falling Ginkgo nuts from the sky just as you start down a slope. Even after they land on the ground, you can still be damaged by them if you step on them. As you jump the next set of pits, a Bonus bird will drop an Invisibility. Another shortly afterwards drops a Shot power-up. A flock of sparrows will descend on the right side of the screen, so fire away with your powered-up shot. As you reach the statue of the Virgin Mary, the screen will stop scrolling and you'll be accosted by the school newspaper staff. ================================================== Stage 2 Mid-boss: Minako Tukiyama / Mami Yamaguchi ================================================== They'll appear from both sides and run back and forth. Aim at either one when they stop. After a few side switches, Minako will run over to join Mami and they'll start their attacks: Mami will throw pens at you in a spread pattern, and Minako will jump into the air and throw columns of newspapers diagonally downwards. The newspapers remain in place where they're thrown until you shoot them. If you stand right in the middle of the screen on the ground, Minako's attacks will never hit you, and you can shoot Mami's pens down easily. Stay in the middle of the screen and don't turn your back on Mami and it's pretty easy to beat them without getting hit. They share a life bar, so it doesn't matter which one you hit. The powered-up shot will make short work of them. On Hard, their attacks will come faster and in greater quantities, and you probably won't be able to shoot down Mami's pens before they hit you, so concentrate on finishing them off quickly to minimize the damage you take. Continuing on, you'll encounter some large pits, plus birds and caterpillars. Double-jump the pits if you need to. Amid a flock of birds and spiders is a Bonus bird dropping an all-important Life recover. Watch for a girl on her bike approaching from behind. Another Bonus bird will give you a Shot power-up, then it's several large flocks of crows. Mow them down for some easy bonus points. As you hear the music die away, get over on the right half of the screen, because you've got company approaching from behind. Grab the Invisibility from the Bonus bird carefully. WARNING: A huge KANAKO is approaching fast! ============================= Stage 2 Boss: Kanako Hosokawa ============================= True to all the jokes, Kanako stands half as tall as the whole screen. She only has two attacks. She'll spit a laser, lighting the ground ablaze; jump to avoid it. Then she'll make a scary face, turn invulnerable and jump into the air, and come crashing down on your current position. Either that, or she'll come crashing down at the right end of the screen. Either way, when she lands she'll either shake a bunch of Gingko nuts loose from the trees and they'll rain down on you, or she'll generate more flames from the impact. If she jumps again right after she lands, she's trying to land on you; if she walks for a while before jumping, she'll land on the right side of the screen. Dash out of your current position once she jumps off the screen so she won't fall on you, and jump again in midair to clear the landing flames. Stay ahead of her because you can get pinned in the corner if you get behind her. Fire your backwards shots at her continuously and you should be able to cut her down to size. On Hard, she'll jump at you almost constantly, so expect to dash a lot. Avoid direct contact with her at all costs, it takes a lot of life off. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stage 3: 0:45 PM +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This stage kicks off out on the school athletic field. Grab the Bonus bird's Laser power-up and put it to use immediately on the girls in the background. In the next section, you need to jump over the basket-carrying girls and shoot the beanbag-throwing girls in the background while making sure you don't get hit by the thrown beanbags. You can't hurt the basket girls with your shots, but you can jump on their heads to defeat them. Up a ramp you go, then it's time for more pit-jumping with sparrows and caterpillars getting in your way. A Bonus bird will drop Invisibility. Blow through some more crows, and make sure you grab the Shot power-up from the Bonus bird. You'll enter the school dojo and screw up the kendo team's practice session. ================================ Stage 3 Mid-boss: Chisato Tanuma ================================ In the first part of the fight, Chisato will be invulnerable. She'll throw a fit and sic her flunkies from the kendo club on you from both sides. They take a few more hits than normal girls, but should be no match against a powered-up main shot. Try not to spam it too much to save it for Chisato herself. When Chisato stops crying and starts her attack, blast away at her from a distance. She'll fling circular energy blasts at you, one straight ahead and one at a 45 degree angle. The blasts are large and rather hard to avoid, although you can jump on them and bounce off safely. She'll throw two blasts, then jump to the other side of the room, throwing downwards blasts as she does so. If you take too long to beat her, she'll call the troops in again and you'll have to deal with another swarm before you can attack her again. Show her the laser is mightier than the sword. On Hard difficulty, she'll put up much more of a fight since her attacks come faster and her defense is much higher. As she starts her attacks, stand right next to her and double-jump her shots; you should clear both sets since they start out low. Then when she jumps, her projectiles will pass over and behind you so you can paste her in the back until she turns around and attacks again. Leaving the dojo, you'll encounter girls tossing huge medicine balls back and forth. You know the drill: Foreground ones with the main shot, background ones with the Lock-on. Just watch out for the balls themselves. You can destroy them but it takes a ton of hits. As the difficulty level goes up, these girls get harder and harder to kill. You'll probably get hit a few times, so make sure you grab the Life recover from the Bonus bird immediately afterwards. More kendo girls will rush you head-on, so plow through them. More crows and a Bonus bird with a Shot power-up await. Use it on the flocks of birds and schoolgirls afterwards to score some items and bonus points. One more Bonus bird with a 50,000 point bonus, then it's time for a jungle-style rumble. ===================================================================== Stage 3 Boss: Eriko Torii (Rosa Foetida) / Yamanobe-sensei's Elephant ===================================================================== Eriko, she of the shiny forehead, will appear along with her teacher/crush Yamanobe-sensei, a scruffy dude riding a big blue elephant. Blast the elephant, which moves from side to side, while double-jumping it to avoid damage. After a few passes, the elephant will rear back and shoot water from its trunk that will fall from the sky. During this time, it is invulnerable, so concentrate on not getting hit. Eriko will be taking potshots at you with her boomerang-like yellow roses, but she's invulnerable at this point, so avoid her and focus on the elephant. You can shoot her roses. Once Yamanobe and his pachyderm pal are out of the way, you can go after Eriko. She'll rear back and quickly fire a laser from her forehead at your current position as she floats around. It's hard to dodge, so try to fake her out by jumping and she'll hopefully fire it over your head as you fall. She'll do this four times, then shift to the other side of the screen. She'll also throw yellow roses at you, which you can destroy. On Hard mode she'll fire much faster. Keep shooting and she'll suffer a firey (and flowery) defeat. Note the boss music has changed; this is the boss music you'll be hearing for the rest of the game as you square off against the Yamayurikai (the three head girls from the student council). Eriko was the first, two more await. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stage 4: 2:50 PM +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This stage's background music is a techno remix of Franz Schubert's famous hymn "Ave Maria" (aka "That Other Song They've Played At Every Christian Wedding For The Past 300 Years"). This stage might as well be called "Sei's Yuri Paradise"; the girls you encounter in it appear to be truly having a gay old time, if you get my drift. The same goes for both the mid-boss and the final boss of the stage. Still sure the yuri's just subtext? The first part of the stage takes place on two levels. You can drop from the top level to the lower one by pressing jump while crouching, but watch out for the pits. You'll encounter the Tenshi (angels) here. They'll swarm in, blow trumpets and shoot musical notes at you. Deal with them ruthlessly. Next up is some caterpillars, a Bonus bird with a Shot power-up, and girls in the background ripe for the Locking-on and blasting. Another bike girl follows from behind afterwards, so watch for her. Another Bonus bird drops Invisibility; grab it and keep on blasting your way through. You'll arrive in the dance hall, where the all-girl ballroom dance club is waltzing the day away. You can't defeat them, so just avoid them by running underneath them or jumping over them as they float up and down. The higher the difficulty, the more couples you have to avoid. Score a 50,000 point bonus from the Bonus bird first. Nail the girls in the background with Lock-on shots and the Tenshi with beam spam, and soon a group of eight girls will surround you and start singing. This is the school choir, and your mission is to make them shut up. In other words, blast them and the musical notes they shoot at you. You can only hit them when one is directly in front of or behind you so you'll have to time your shots and take them out one at a time. Try to defeat them quickly so they aren't in your way when you face off with the school's star singer, which is coming up shortly. ============================================== Stage 4 Mid-boss: Shizuka Kanina (Rosa Canina) ============================================== Shizuka, the silvery-voiced Sei fangirl, will surround herself with an energy barrier and start singing. Keep your distance because the barrier can hurt you. Focus on taking out her piano accompanist first so she can't spam notes at you, then attack Shizuka herself. She'll float in the air, completely stationary, generating notes two at a time which will home on your position, but they move very slowly and are easy to shoot down (on Hard, they move a bit faster). Stay on the ground and angle your shots upwards at her and she'll be a sitting duck. Punch her ticket to Italy with some laser-powered heckling. Exiting the dance hall, you'll spot a Bonus bird. Grab a Laser power-up, Lock-on to the girls in the background, and get onto the top level to avoid the bottomless pits. More birds, girls and Tenshi await, plus a Bonus bird with a Life recover. MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE TO GET IT (you probably need it at this point, as the dance hall melee likely took a lot out of you). As you approach the chapel, Tenshi will attack en masse. Respond in kind. One more Bonus bird with a 50,000 point bonus, then it's time to face off against the one girl whose driving is truly unsafe at any speed. ================================================== Stage 4 Boss: Sei Sato (Rosa Gigantea) / Sei's Car ================================================== Sei, queen of tomboys, will appear from the right side of the screen in her Volkswagen Deathmobile. She'll fire missiles out of the trunk which will rise upwards and over you before curving around from behind. Fire rapidly to destroy the missiles as soon as she launches them, then jump over her as she drifts towards the left side of the screen. She'll deploy a machine gun from inside the hood and fire streams of blue bullets at your position; jump at the last second to avoid them. Then she'll move back to the right and repeat the process. When the car's health is low, she'll fire a stream of bullets from her machine gun that spin in a circular pattern. This is very hard to avoid; you have to get as far away as possible and try to jump between the bullets as they spread out. Once the car is toast, you'll fight Sei herself. She floats in the air and throws a white rose to the middle of the screen which deploys three laser beams and slowly rotates around. Stand on the ground and angle your shots up at the rose. Destroy it at all costs because the beams are impossible to avoid for very long. The rose will spin faster and take more shots to destroy on Hard. After you destroy the rose, sneak in shots on Sei when you can as she moves around. She'll throw another rose, so destroy it and keep up your assault on her. She's an easier target to hit than Eriko was, so hit her hard and watch her crash and burn like she was going 200 km/h in the wrong lane. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stage 5: 4:10 PM +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The pace of this stage is a little more laid-back, but massive numbers of enemies await, ++++++++++ The pace of this stage is a little more laid-back, but massive numbers of enemies await, and a pair of unconventional bosses will challenge you. Bottomless pits and enemies in the background abound, so be careful. On normal and hard difficulty, spiky plants will burst up out of the ground throughout this area. Shoot them to make them go down. You'll start with a swarm of bees approaching as you leave the school building. Shoot them down before they can attack, then get ready to jump pits. A Bonus bird will give you a Shot power-up. As you enter the indoor botanical garden, spiders, bees and schoolgirls are everywhere. Many girls will be hiding behind the scenery in the background, but you should be able to Lock-on to them. Blast your way through them as you travel a few slopes, and you'll find a lone schoolgirl standing by herself. ============================== Stage 5 Mid-boss: Mifuyu Uzawa ============================== Mifuyu will summon a huge flower and seat herself on it. This puts her in the background, so you can't hit her with your main shot. You'll have to rely on your Lock-on shot to hit her. Fire your main shot only as needed to defend against her attacks. Her plants will appear from under the ground, bloom flowers that spit large quantities of projectiles at you and try to stab you. She'll also rain seeds on you from the air and chuck books that ricochet back and forth off the ends of the screen as they work their way downwards towards you. Her attacks come much faster on Hard mode. Your best defense is a good offense, so keep hitting Mifuyu as fast as you can and blast her flowers when you need to clear the air; try not to let her fill the screen with projectiles. Moving on, birds, spiders and schoolgirls await down a slope, plus a Bonus bird with a badly needed Life recover power-up. Jump some more pits, deal with the bees and spiders, and grab Invisibility from the Bonus bird just before you leave the arborteum and head back outside. Outside, the amount of enemies gets downright ridiculous on hard difficulty. Roast some crows and schoolgirls, grab a 50,000 point bonus from the Bonus bird, and keep jumping the pits. You'll arrive outside the student council mansion in time to encounter... another lone schoolgirl standing by herself. She won't be by herself for long, though. MAKE SURE YOU GRAB THE LIFE RECOVER FROM THAT LAST BONUS BIRD! You'll need it, most likely. =========================================== Stage 5 Boss: Youko Mizuno (Rosa Chinensis) =========================================== If you haven't found any bosses challenging so far, Youko will probably change your mind. The crafty master schemer has some wicked tricks up her sleeve. For the first part of the fight, she'll surround herself with a shield of red roses while summoning girls from the background to attack you. Deal with the girls the way you usually would, and blast her shield to pieces so you can damage her. On Hard mode, the girls will throw pink energy balls at you as they fall from the sky and their numbers will be massive. After you knock about 30% of her life off, she'll change strategies. Summoning a large group of roses, she'll light the ground on fire, making it unsafe to stand on. You'll have to jump into the air and bounce off the roses to avoid damage, while trying to hit her and dodge the energy orbs she throws as well. She'll throw yet another rose, which, if you destroy it on Hard difficulty, breaks up into petals, essentially filling the entire screen with dangerous projectiles. Having fun? Eventually the fire will wear off, which means of course she'll start the pattern over again. If your soeur falls down into the fire, she won't get hurt, but she won't be able to hit Youko from down there either. Press the jump button to get your soeur up onto the flowers so she can help you and try to finish Youko off before she can cause any more trouble. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Stage 6: 6:30 PM +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As your characters try to leave school, they will be revisited by most of the bosses they've already defeated, who will have increased defense so your shots do less damage. In between each fight will be pairs of Bonus birds (on hard difficulty, they drop fewer power-ups than the ones listed), leading up to a final confrontation with all three Yamayurikai. Tsutako is up first. Grab the Shot power-up and make her regret not listening to the bus driver and sticking her head out the window. You should be able to defeat her without taking damage. Next is Touko and Suguru again. Touko is much more aggressive this time; she throws tons of items and switches to drills when she still has 75% life left. Grab the Laser power-up and make use of it. Next is Minako and Mami. Do the same strategy as before, they should give you no trouble, especially if you grab the Shot power-up before the fight starts. Kanako will challenge you next. Remember, she comes from the left side. No problems so far, right? (Make sure you grab that Life Recover from the Bonus bird.) Next is a rematch with Chisato and her kendo underlings. The Invisibility from the Bonus bird will help you avoid taking damage. You'll have to make more of an effort to dodge her attacks this time, since her defense is higher and she'll take longer to beat. The next fight is much tougher: Shizuka, the pianist, AND the choir, all at the same time. Focus on the piano first, then deal with the choir, and finish with Shizuka. Shizuka's defense is increased, but the Shot power-up will even the odds. On the ground is the safest place to be. On Hard, it may be easiest to just go for Shizuka and ignore her companions; once she goes down, the rest go with her. The final fight in the boss gauntlet is Mifuyu. Same strategy as before. Lock-on, fire, rinse, repeat; be aware that her higher defense means a longer fight. Try not to take any unnecessary damage, because the final fight is next. Get that Shot power-up and save as much of it as you can for the upcoming battle. After finishing Mifuyu, the background will change, and the three roses will challenge you. =================================================================================================== Stage 6 Boss: Youko Mizuno (Rosa Chinensis) / Sei Sato (Rosa Gigantea) / Eriko Torii (Rosa Foetida) =================================================================================================== As if beating these three wasn't tough enough the first time, you now have to take them all on at once. At the start of the fight, they're invincible, so don't bother attacking. Two of the three girls will randomly be selected to attack you, and the third will move off screen. Once the word "Target" appears over their heads, you can hit them. Each uses variations of their previous attacks: Youko surrounds herself with red roses, throws orbs and occasionally lights the ground on fire briefly. Sei will either throw a white rose that sits in the middle of the screen with rotating laser beams, or ones that move back and forth with smaller beams protruding from them. Eriko will shoot her forehead laser and throw yellow roses. All three girls share a common life bar, so it's generally best to just attack whoever's closest to you. When they form up as three again, stop shooting, because they're invulnerable until they start their attack again. After you get them to 50% health, all three of them will attack at the same time. At this point things will start to get insane, and anything goes. Sei will summon lines of white roses with the lasers moving from right to left, Eriko will hover up and down on the left side of the screen and fire horizontal forehead lasers, and Youko will surround herself with red roses and swoop through the middle of the screen, trying to run into you. Hit them as hard as you can, quickly, because you're going to take damage no matter what. Stay on them until you finally wear them down, and they'll go KABOOM with lots of rose petals. Pat yourself on the back, you've finished the game! Sit back and watch the ending credits, featuring the whole cast of the game in a parade, then start a new game and try turning the difficulty up, or switching to Manual mode, and see how good you really are. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- V. Extras/Special mode --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After finishing the game with Yumi and Touko, a new option, "Special", will appear at the title screen. Some very challenging special games are available here. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A. Freeplay mode +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As you spend more and more time playing Lilian Fourhand, the number of credits (continues) available to you at the start of each game gradually increases. After about six hours of game play, the game will switch to Freeplay mode, giving you unlimited continues. Makes Hard mode much more doable in one go. You can check the current number of credits at the title screen or by pausing the game during gameplay. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ B. Endless mode +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Accessed from the Special menu. An endless swarm of enemies will be thrown at you; destroy as many as you can before you run out of life. Earn power-ups from defeated enemies and Bonus birds. Similar to "survival" mode on a lot of fighting games; starts easy but gets difficult quickly. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C. 1000Junk mode +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Accessed from the Special menu at the title screen. Destroy 1,000 enemies as fast as possible. Like Endless, you'll be swarmed with enemies, so this isn't as easy as it sounds. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ D. 2 Minutes mode +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Accessed from the Special menu. Basically a "Time attack", destroy as many enemies as you can in two minutes. If you survive that long. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ E. 3 Million mode +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Accessed from the Special menu. Earn 3,000,000 points as fast as possible. Remember that besides destroying enemies, you can get points from dropped items. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ F. Vs. Boss mode +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Accessed from the Special menu. You can challenge any of the bosses from the game. The difficulty level is ramped up to maximum, so these fights will be much tougher than the in-game fights (Kanako and Chisato in particular are ridiculously overpowered). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ G. Mix & match characters +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Once the Special menu has been unlocked, you can customize your teams. At the Character select screen, press Up or Down. You'll be taken to a special selection screen where you first pick the character you control, then pick your soeur, allowing you to create any team you want from the seven available girls (Sachiko, Yumi, Shimako, Noriko, Rei, Yoshino, Touko). You can do this for the main game and for the Special games. The consensus most powerful team is Shimako with Touko as a soeur (Maribato! players will note these two were the most powerful team in that game as well). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And that's everything you need to know to play Lilian Fourhand.
